Work was hard on the farm. In hay season, there were many fourteen-hour days. Daddy would say, “Sookie, (my nick-name) you have to make hay while the sun shines.” Diligence to work hard while you can is a key to success no matter what career you choose. A strong work ethic is imperative for excellence. While striving is not an element we want to develop in Kingdom living, neither is laziness. We must do our work as unto the Lord no matter what it is. While work is not the definition of one’s identity, it is an element of purposefulness. We must be willing to seek the Lord in what He desires for us to do, and then we are to do that work with excellence. Our salvation is not earned by our works; it is by grace. However, faith without works is dead. So which is it? It is both. We must live in grace, finding the joy of the Lord to give us strength to do the job set before us, and then set our hearts to finish the task.
“The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
2 Thessalonians 3:10
“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of
the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only
hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm
in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.” Philippians 1:2
“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is
to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me --
the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. “ Acts 20:24
“And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace
would no longer be grace.” Romans 11:6
”I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.”
2 Timothy 4:7
“These are trustworthy sayings. I want you to stress these
things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful
to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are
excellent and profitable for everyone.” Titus 3:8
The answers to life are sometimes wrapped up in the everyday chores, revealed only to those willing to look deep enough to discover the secrets that are in plain, open sight. “Hay Bales in Texas” remind me of this verse.
“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and it is the glory of Kings to dis-cover it. Proverbs 25:2
